I don't know what's the fuss over these books. I'm refusing to read them. I'm a literary snob, but I did actually find and read a summary and reviews and...it sounds ridiculous
( Read more... )
There's an older woman I know who reads them. A friend of Scott's parents. I just politely said "No, I haven't read them" when I was asked. I have no intention to ever read them either. But it struck me as odd that someone of her age would read books like that, that are geared toward teenagers. She liked them. And I'd hate to insult her intelligence and think "Oh, well, maybe she just hasn't read enough GOOD literature in her life," especially since I don't know her very well. I don't want to insult your wife either, of course. Though I suspect that some of the people who enjoy Twilight are some of the same people who enjoy Laurell (?) K Hamilton's books, which I think are complete garbage (I've tried to read her, and it was just so awful I didn't get very far).
My friends are obsessed, and they promised if I read the first book and never wanted to read another, they would never mention it in front of me again.
So I did. And to be honest, it was a poorly written piece of PG13 smut, but for *some* reason, I was kind of enjoyable. I knew how bad it was, but wanted to read more. So I read the second, and it was written *MUCH* better, and I liked the story, though it was still pretty cheesey and ridiculous.
I read the THIRD one, and that's where I got pissy and opinionated. The characters become douche bags that force themselves on women, the "heroin" is a whiney brat that expects everything on a silver platter (then hates herself for making such poor choices, or something). Anyway, the third book was absolutely horrible, and I refuse to read the fourth, and have been Anti-Twilight ever since.
And I read summaries of the fourth, and it just sounds outlandish and retarted.
I have a feeling I would react the same way. So I'll just save myself the grief and take your word for it. :)
I WAS going to give it a chance, because I had a similar "oh it's just a stupid kids book" point of view on the Harry Potter books. But after seeing the films for those, I finally broke down and read the books, which I loved.
But...this just sounds so absurd and ridiculous and high school drama-y and cheesey.... And like I said, the movie looks like it's going to be horrific. And not in a scary sense...unless it being so completely awful is scary.
