Laura was exhausted after a day on the move, setting up in a small guest bedroom at Delphi’s house. So many people wanted blessings, and it seemed that the population inside the house had grown exponentially. She felt a bit lost without Sam, but she knew that was something she’d get over eventually. Her life hadn’t been dependent on him before, why should it be now? Still, her heart tugged every time someone said something or did something to remind her of him. It was getting to the point where she was sure her mind made up things just so that he could stay at the front of her feelings, never quite disappearing from memory even for a second.
All that she wanted to do was lay and sit and think, but she was told quickly, by Delphi no less, that she would have to help with the chores, same as everyone else. So that evening, she found herself in the kitchen alone with the oracle, chopping vegetables for a stew that was simmering on the stove. It was silent as Laura’s thoughts ran in circles, and she felt rather than heard Delphi’s sigh.
"Child. Stop thinkin’ about that boy. What good is it doing you now, anyway?"
Blinking, Laura looked up and tried to form words, but nothing coherent came out.
"You’ve got duties here, and you may love him, but it’s time to move on. He’s got duties as well, and ain’t doin’ anyone any bit of good with you mopin’ like you are."
"I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was such a hindrance," she said with a slight edge to her voice. "Let me just forget everything I’ve been through in the past two weeks to better please you."
Delphi’s eyes narrowed and she turned to Laura with a wooden mixing spoon in her hand. "Now I know you ain’t in my kitchen talkin’ to me like that. I didn’t say forget. I said ‘get over it’. Look at you. The president, talkin’ like you don’t have no sense..."
Putting down the knife, Laura took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I’m sorry. I am, I just...it’s been a long two weeks. I don’t understand him. I don’t understand what’s happening. He pulled away so quickly. I shouldn’t have..." She abandoned her train of thought and shook her head. "What does it matter, I’m here now. And I know what I need to work towards."
"You’re right. And he wasn’t helpin’ you get there no way. But he’s gonna be important, girl. You right not to forget about him."
Laura tilted her head to the side. "What do you mean?"
"He healed you, did he not?"
"He helped me."
"He healed you with his blood."
"I was healed last time with blood."
"Half human, half Cylon."
"Sam is not a Cylon."
Delphi shook her head. "He a demon."
Her words made Laura look down at the chopping block. She hated hearing the words; she hated knowing the truth. She wanted to go back to when it was just the two of them, content in the bubble they shared.
"Don’t the scriptures talk about the demons? Don’t you remember what you’ve learned, Laura?"
Making eye contact with Delphi, Laura tried to understand what she was saying. "The scriptures..." She thought for a minute silently, and then as the realization hit her, she gasped.
Delphi spoke slowly. "The scriptures tell of a lesser demon who helped humanity."
"Sam..."
"He sent here to help you, not hurt you. Or your people. But it’s gon’ take a lot of convincing on his part."
"I already tried," Laura said sadly.
"That don’t mean you give up. He’s had a lot of time to think he’s something he ain’t. Eventually, his day of salvation will come."
They went back to cooking in silence after that, Laura wondering if she should call Sam. She’d said in her letter that she wouldn’t, not for a while. So she sat on the information with a bit more hope in her heart, resolving that Sam was still her white light.
