Okay, you make valid points, but the reason for those barganis and deals is if the customer doesn't want to buy a HomeMaker, and by using the special offers is a way to attract them to buy it. If the homemaker really did have all of those pieces *standard* cutco should just sell it like that, like you said.
Why do you think the other brands offer their products at "sale" prices, and list the "retail" prices? It's all sales hype, everywhere. Everyone wants to give their customers a "good deal", and make it more appealing than the competition. But I guarantee you, if Henckel's could sell their products at retail price over here, they'd love to.
I just wanted to say regarding the Henckels Price Comparison, that when I first started and initianlly looked at the price of the Henckles, I thought that it was misleading as well looking at the Cutco 18 piece and the Henckles 18 piece, but if you do more research and look into it, not only does the Henckles not have as many knives, they are also not the same knives...the sets come with different knives then what comes in teh cutco set.
Of course they're not the same. Henckel's isn't going to have a "Trimmer", but they do have a "Utility Knife" of similar size and usage. It's the closest comparable piece they can find. Henckel's also only has the one kind of fork, so they had to use two of them in the comparison since the Homemaker has two different kinds. I think it's still a good comparison, piece for piece.
