I think portion control can work. I accidentally put on weight when I was cooking more food to get ar_boblad's weight up. When I'd put on half a stone in 6 months, I realised that I wasn't meant to be eating larger portions too... Down to normal portions and I'm back to my normal weight :)
Also - space is a resource. Hoard some uncluttered space for yourself :)
