Chapter Two

Where am I?

Wide azure eyes blinked blearily open, the whole world out of focus. Naruto lifted his chin off his chest slowly and winced. Damn, his neck hurt. He waited impatiently for his vision to return to normal, clenching his fists slightly, his wrists screaming for release from linked metal.

What the…

Naruto looked up, narrowing his eyes a little. He was hanging by his arms. They were so tired from the strained position that they had gone numb some time ago.

The room he was in was desolate, at best. There were no windows. There was a heavy wooden door about fifteen feet in front of him. Other than that, there was nothing but stone floors and walls. Naruto saw dark spots on the floor that looked too much like dried blood… it made his stomach turn.

His memory returned all too swiftly, his eyes going wide and his breath catching in his throat. Sasuke. He had seen Sasuke. He had been with Orochimaru…

Naruto had spun around to see Orochimaru standing behind Kakashi. The Sennin had been grinning in a way that stretched his face in an unnatural manner. Just seeing it made Naruto shudder.

“Orochimaru.” Kakashi whispered.

Naruto had never seen Kakashi scared. Ever. He always seemed to be bored, but cheerful. Even in extreme situations, he was calm, collected and never seemed to lose confidence that his team would prevail. And they always did. Maybe that is why -- seeing Kakashi’s eyes wide and his stance suddenly so rigid -- that Naruto found himself becoming a little frightened as well.

“You seem to have a talent for protecting the very boys whom I seek.” Orochimaru swept some burning debris away with his foot and took a step forward. “But as before, you will not be able to keep me from taking what I want.”

Naruto spared a second to look around, shifting Sakura in his arms slightly. The girl’s head rolled to one side, smearing blood on the sleeve of Naruto’s jacket. He had to get her out of here… where the hell was everyone?! They had been in a very boring meeting and now suddenly, the only ones in the burning room were the four of them. Naruto could vaguely make out panicked voices through the roar of the flames, but couldn’t see a thing through the billowing smoke.

Kakashi slowly turned to face Orochimaru, his eyes slowly narrowing and his brows clenching together in concentration. He raised a kunai blade and took a step in front of Naruto.

“Sensei.”

Both Kakashi and Orochimaru looked up to the figure standing on a splintering beam above their heads. It was Sasuke. Naruto took a step back, his mouth falling open.

Sasuke looked taller and leaner than Naruto remembered. His hair had grown out to an almost ‘shaggy’ state, but somehow, it looked good on him. Sasuke was wearing a black outfit that hugged to his slim form ending at his knees. His eyes were slanted and exotic, his Sharingan eyes leveled on Orochimaru.

No one really did anything. Naruto would have thought time itself had frozen, if not for the ever-flickering flames surrounding them. Then, silently, Sasuke flipped from the beam. It collapsed behind Orochimaru with a loud crash just as Sasuke landed beside him in a kneel.

“Reporting in. We have the Fifth fighting Tayuya. Konoha is completely surrounded.” Sasuke said in a wicked voice, that Naruto did not recognize.

Orochimaru lowered his hand to the boy’s head, stroking a pale hand through the ebony stands carefully. “Very good, my Sasuke-kun…”

Kakashi took this opportunity to throw a small pellet at the pair, shrouding the room in yet more smoke.

Orochimaru smirked, shaking his head a little. He sliced through the smoke easily with his hand, sending it spiraling into the atmosphere, until it became vaguely transparent. He glanced to Sasuke who rose to his feet, gazing at Kakashi, who was still crouched before Naruto and Sakura. Sasuke shrugged, with an unimpressed sigh.

“They’re only copies.”

“Ah…”

Kakashi had thrown the small smoke pellet, not as an attack move, but as a distraction to get Naruto and Sakura away from the scene. Naruto’s head was reeling.

“Sensei, that was Sasuke!” Naruto blurted, louder than he had intended. Kakashi slapped a hand over the Genin’s mouth, held a finger to his mask and proceeded to speak in low tones.

“We don’t have a lot of time, Naruto. I need you to get Sakura to a safe place and stay with her until I can get to you.”

“No! You need me here!” But even as Naruto said this, he knew he was wrong. This smoke wasn’t helping Sakura’s condition any. Her breathing, which was shallow and unsteady already, had begun to grow somewhat raspy.

The beam had smashed directly into Sakura’s head. Naruto had tried to push her out of the way, but his leg had been caught under rubble and he hadn’t quite made it in time. When he finally freed himself and lowered to his knees at her side, there was already a generous pool of blood, dying pink strands crimson.

Kakashi’s voice held a very sharp, commanding and somehow menacing tone, even in a whisper. ”Get out of here, Naruto! Sakura’s hurt! She can’t get out on her own!”

“I’m not leaving you right now, Kakashi-Sensei! Sasuke’s with him!” Naruto felt like if he let this opportunity to get Sasuke back go, he would never get it again. It was an unbearable thought.

“Naruto. Please understand me. Get Sakura out of here. She may die if you don’t. Teammates come first. Remember?” Kakashi met Naruto’s eyes squarely. There was a brief silence where the two battled through eye contact. Finally, Naruto lowered his gaze to Sakura.

“Team mates… yeah…” The boy muttered in brushing a strand of hair off Sakura’s nose. He knew he couldn’t stay. Sakura would do the same for him.

“Go. I’ll be with you as soon as I can. Do -not- come looking for me. Or Sasuke.”

Naruto kept his eyes on Sakura, but did not answer. Kakashi put a hand on his shoulder and shook him a little. “Promise me, Naruto.”

“…I promise.”

That was all he could remember. Naruto slowly shook his head from one side to the other, trying to force his memory to recall more. But the pain in his upper body was overpowering his concentration.

Taking in a slow, deep breath, Naruto screamed into the darkness of the room.

“Sasuke! Sakura-Chan! Kakashi-Sensei!” Naruto heard his voice bounce off stonewalls. He scowled.

“Orochimaru! I know you’re there! Where’s Sakura? Sakura!” When all he heard was his own voice singing hollowly around him, Naruto sighed and hung his head again.

“My, my… still spirited after all that? You are something impressive…” The voice was cold, hissing, and wicked. It was Orochimaru’s voice. If snakes could talk, they would probably sound like he did. Naruto snapped his head up and looked at the door, waiting for it to open.

But it did not. In fact, Naruto began to wonder if he had perhaps imagined the voice. He felt awfully weak and perhaps a little sick. His tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth in thirst and his throat was raw from inhaling so much smoke.

Quite suddenly, Naruto could feel Orochimaru’s chakra and he felt his skin rise in goose bumps. He glowered at the door, but again, it did not open. Instead, Naruto felt a warm tongue on the side of his cheek, coming from over his shoulder. He grimaced and pulled away sharply, causing his neck to flare up in renewed pain.

“Welcome to my Winter Home, Uzumaki Naruto.” Naruto could hear the grin in his voice and couldn’t bring himself to turn and face the Sennin. Something in his subconscious wouldn’t allow it.

“Where is Sakura-Chan?” Naruto spat out, his blue eyes narrowed on the freakishly long tongue that was flickering next to his throat.

“The girl…?” A deep chuckle reverberated around the room several times, the sound making Naruto somewhat dizzy. “She died.”

Naruto’s heart seemed to just… cease beating. His mouth hung open and his eyes bugged slightly. Anger was forgotten, Fear was forgotten… all that was left was a black void of disbelief and despair. Slowly, he turned to gaze into the tattooed face of his captor.

“Sa… Sakura-Chan…” The boy’s voice was cracked and choking. His head had dipped back down, his shoulders quivering in grief. Orochimaru could already feel the insistent urge of sexual desire starting to build and he closed his eyes, his smile growing even wider.

“Were you close… to that pathetic rag?” Orochimaru could feel the boy’s sorrow, an aura of deep blue, begin to shade into purple, then red. Red was Anger. Orochimaru couldn’t help but chuckle once more. Sasuke was right about this one. His emotions changed very rapidly and with great passion in each of them. The Sennin shivered.

“You’re lying.”

Orochimaru’s grin faded abruptly. The boy’s chakra was growing steadily and it was well past his own. Kyuubi was said to have great spirit and very resilient, but Orochimaru had no idea the boy could summon the power so quickly.

“You’re lying. Sakura has too much strength to die.” Naruto raised his head again. He was smirking. Orochimaru frowned a little, noticing the boy’s eyes were fading from blue -like his aura-into a deep shade of crimson. They were even deeper than Sasuke’s. Orochimaru began to grin again.

“Sakura is Konoha’s Number One Drama Queen.“ The chains binding Naruto’s wrists began to creak in protest. “She would never allow herself to die from something as lame as a piece of wood. Or the likes of you!”

The chains snapped so quickly, the sound was almost obsolete. Orochimaru took a small step back, watching the boy land to his feet and charge him. Naruto was roaring with fury as he brought a fist up, but Orochimaru’s hand caught it easily before it made contact with his jaw, holding it firmly.

“Hello, my Demon Fox…” Orochimaru cooed into Naruto’s face, his eyes becoming half lidded. Naruto snarled and shot his foot up in a kick. Orochimaru had no problem dodging it. “You’re a little sloppy… but we’ll fix that…” He whispered with a firm certainty.

Naruto pulled back, blind hatred controlling all his actions now. He charged Orochimaru again as instantly, and once again, the Sennin stopped his fists with his own. Forcing all the strength into their entwined hands, they challenged each other’s strength.

“I look forward to having you…” Orochimaru leaned in, his breath brushing against Naruto’s lips. “All of you.”

There was the briefest second, when the two just stared into one another’s faces. Naruto’s teeth were bared and he was growling with determination. Orochimaru was surveying the boy with lustful eyes and his usual smirk.

And then, Orochimaru leaned forward and kissed Naruto.

Naruto lost the battle of strength then and there. The kiss, so carnal and bruising, took him completely off guard. He didn’t have time to even register it completely in his mind before Orochimaru pulled back to kick the Genin across the cheek, sending him spiraling backwards and against a wall.

Naruto did not get back up
