Max took a deep breath and focused very hard on not forming a mental image of his teacher aid. He needed to sound professional, after all. "Fiona, this is Max. I need you to swing by my office as soon as possible today."

"Fiona! It's Peyton! The CDs came in and I'm so excited! I'm going to bring them to show Ellie tomorrow so we can listen to it together for the first time. Want to come? That way you can hear your brother's piece too! I'm leaving about 9 tomorrow morning, so give me a call or show up here or at the causeway!"

Somewhere on his mad dash from reserves meeting to town, Zack pulled out his phone and returned Fiona's call.

"Hey, Fiona! I got your message, and I'm just calling to let you know that I'm free pretty much any day this week except Sunday! If you want to meet up on Thursday or Friday or something with those books, we could probably find a quiet place at the park to look over them. What do you think?"

"That sounds just fine," and she sounded oddly relieved at the thought, "perhaps... Friday? Would that do?"

"Friday is awesome," Zack replied, grinning and adding an extra little bounce to his step as he continued along his way. "I'm on my way to rehearsal, so I can't talk for long, but I'll see you on Friday! Is there anything I should bring? Maybe a notebook, huh?"

"You can," she allowed, "but only if you want to. I'm going to try and keep it light."

"Hi, Fiona? It's Aphrodite. Listen, I could really use your help on something. I need to leave the island for a day, but I don't want to close the store. Could you cover Thursday for me? Just this once? I'll leave a key for you under the plant by the door. Just consider it a nice day for reading? I'm leaving tonight, so if there's a problem, give me a call. Thanks, Fiona, I really appreciate it. Byeee!"

"F-Fiona?" Maron said tentatively, biting her lip before continuing on. "It's Maron. I just... had a question. I thought, maybe, that you'd--understand."

A pause.

"...what do you think it means for the world if Eve, I guess me, falls? I--don't know. Sorry. This is stupid. I didn't mean to bother you."

She caught the phone on the last ring.

"Maron, hi. You're not bothering me. What was that?"

"I--" Maron shook her head. "It's just--what if, if, Eve's--my--body still walked, and talked, but there was nothing--good there."

She swallowed.

"What--do you think that means?" It sounded so stupid.

She pulled the phone a little closer.

"You want to come over and talk?" she offered softly.

"It'd give me a few minutes to give you a good answer" and I can give you a hug and let you meet the kitten. That stupid spell hurt so many people.
