Fiona had picked out books, put them down again, placed them around the room, loaded them into a bag, unloaded them-- she was starting to think that her brother was going to yell at her (yes, Eliot, yelling) over her mistreatment of their tactical texts if she did much more. The whole thing had her nervous, though yesterday's talk with Dinah had ( Read more... )

Rose was actually reading for once in her alcove before heading down to town with Jaina when she heard pacing and noises from across the hall.

And the book was boring anyway. Stupid Lives of Moroi Saints (gag)

She pushed aside her curtain and leaned against the doorframe of the cubicle opposite. "Did the floor need to be leveled?" Rose asked lightly.

Fiona looked up with a blink.

"What?"

"The pacing," Rose said, sounding amused. "I thought maybe the floor was trying to rise up, and you were subduing it again."

She looked down at the floor, as if to ask it if it was intending to cause any trouble like that. Had it done that before? Was that common?

...was it common elsewhere?

She was over thinking this, she was reasonably sure.

"Er, no. That would be" not that she wanted to admit to being nervous "me. Just... walking. I'm waiting for someone. A little excited."

"Knock knock!"

There would have been actual knocking, were alcoves given doors as opposed to curtains, but Zack was totally the type to make do with what he was available to him. And what he had today was a notebook and a pen, and a bit of a stretch from the door of the cabin itself, because he really, really didn't want to just wander into a girls' cabin unannounced.

... Even if there had only been, like, one other boy in his cabin last semester. So? It was the principle of the matter. There were girls in there.

...his voice did wonders. It even brought a smile right off the bat as she peeked out from behind her curtain.

"Over here, Zack," she said, beckoning him over with one hand.

Then she ducked back in to pull a couple of the pillows from her bed to the bit of floor she had so they could sit with the books.

"Thanks for coming."

Zack was making the beeline, yes, quite happy to settle in Fiona's alcove, and then plop down on one of the pillows that she'd relocated.

"Oh, it's not a problem! I mean, you're the one doing me the favor, here, teaching me about this stuff, right? I'm not really the strongest strategist out there. I take the orders, usually."

"Even someone taking orders should know what they're doing," she said, though because it was Zack, it was very mild and more of a joke than actual advice.

"How have, er, you been?"

After class, Peyton made her way over. "Hey. I forgot to give you one of the CDs," she said, offering it.

Peyton managed a not very convincing half-smile. "Thanks. You know, for everything."

She shook her head.

"Don't worry about it."

She'd actually felt capable during all that and, terrible as it was, she almost felt as if the trip with Peyton was where she'd at least been useful.
