Steve Pellinen wrote a great post on the NASPA/WGPO thing. i have lil or no hope for the future of tourney scrabble given the landscape. As the dinosaurs fade away, the evolution of generation next will be marred by the lack of a historical perspective. dess fucked up, but so izz MANY more MUCH more important things ( Read more... )

OLD SCRABBLE IS BORING anonymous June 7 2010, 18:09:29 UTC
perhaps what inhibits tourney scrabble is the same thing that inhibits massive interest in scrabble itself. it is now the ritalin generation. old scrabble is not fast-paced. it's boring. yes it's good to phase out the turtle-like relicts and let the youngins take over. old scrabble is like boring ice fishing or any other kind of mind-numbing fishing "sport". to survive, perhaps new scrabble should be like soccer or hockey. i don't want to watch boring players with brains damaged by marijuana and other such substances that makes humans sooooo mellow and say things like "dude". granpas and grandmas should also be automatically banned from tourneys. yes, it's kind of fascist to exclude certain people but look what adolph hitler did to the world for a while. caused all sorts of excitment for about 4 years. but back to the issue at hand... watching those past scrabble "players" play was like watching paint dry. it was not exciting. i want to watch maniacs on meth and other such hyperactive deviants play scrabble instead. power to the ( ... )

marlon, dude... do not be a hypocrite. do not do what they they do at CGP. ALL people have opinions and should not be censored, anonymous or not. yes if the MAJORITY are in favor of banning old people from tourneys for the purpose of keeping alive something that is dying... well why not? scrabble IS dying. no? never mind then.

Definitely, Marlon, do not censor anybody, and do not be like CGP!

HOWEVER, requiring that comments be attributable to a person is not censorship in the slightest. It's just adhering to the principle that people should be accountable for their actions.

Free speech is great, and necessary, but anonymous speech, in a relatively free society like the U.S., does more harm than good.

being anonymous is a truer way to be free. that way one can TRULY express one's opinions. it is the outsider's way. that way, marlon, you don't only have the opinions of your friends. that way, it is less like a cult.
