Can you just dig the chip out?

Digging the chip out is illegal, and makes the Passport null and void.

Interesting. My passport is from 2000... so I still have a few years with it. It still has the ghetto look with the inserted photo too. Haha.

You 2000 passport doesn't have the RFID chip. They started the E-Passports in 2006 (and some "Legacy" passports are still being made to get rid of the extras).

My 2005 passport has a scanned photo but no RFID chip.

the information is encrypted anyhow, and in reality, there is such non-vital information is currently stored on the RFID chips that you should be more worried about the credit cards with the RFID's in them.

It also brings more attention to you when you have that laying out.

It is an interesting idea however.

If I remember correctly, Canada and much of the EU have RFID tags in their Passports.

1) You should NEVER have your passport out when in a public place. It is always good to secure it on your person when out in public. Also, I think they will tell that you are a North American simply by looking at you, or hearing your english/American accent. (though I have been confused for Canadian and Australian before...)

2) If you are traveling on official Business, you would have a RED US passport, and those stick out like sore thumbs. Our normal blue passports are actually pretty inconspiquous compared to some.

What countries are you going to? You may need to have two passports if you are going to places like Isreal, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
