The Creature At Night

‘The creature at night,
You said it would never find out where I rest my head at night.’

- I Swear This Place Is Haunted - A Skylit Drive

I sat up in bed as the last line ended, grabbing my iPod to restart the song.

It was around two in the morning, according to the flashing blue digits on my stereo. I sighed, running my hand over my face as I got out of bed and stretched. Shuffling my way towards the kitchen, I felt something rub against my leg. I paused and looked down, seeing two green eyes staring back at me. A corner of my mouth curled into a smile as I leaned down to scratch my cat behind the ears.

“You’re hungry too, huh?” I whispered. Slipping my iPod into my pyjama pants' back pocket, I gathered the black and white cat into my arms and continued to the kitchen.

Careful not to drop the cat, I flipped on the light.

“Puss, why is your food all over the floor?” I wondered aloud, scanning the cat food all over the floor with a raised eyebrow.

I placed the cat next to her bowl, where she sat and gazed up at me, before I went to the cabinet under the sink to get the dustpan and brush. Quickly cleaning up the mess and putting it in the trash, I gave the cat some more food. She purred and rubbed against my arm, her tail coiling around my wrist, before she began eating.

I took my headphones out of my ears, turned my iPod off and set it on the counter next to the toaster. Rummaging around in the cupboards, I sighed, trying to find something to eat, finally deciding on a peanut butter sandwich. Setting the sandwich on a plate, I pulled myself onto the counter by the window. I looked out into the night sky, seeing the moon at it's fullest accompanied only by stars, not a cloud in sight.

The orange glow of the street light outside the window flickered for a moment, making the fluorescent kitchen light seem too white. Glancing to the street below, I felt my heart start to race as I dropped my sandwich, not noticing as it fell to the floor.

There was a dark hooded figure hunched over underneath the street light, as if it were in a spotlight.

It’s shoulders were eerily broad, almost twice as broad as any other part of it’s body. It appeared to be in pain, and I could see it panting, breath coming out in short white puffs.

The night breeze flittered in through the window, making my cheeks flush pink from the cold.

A loud crack echoed down the empty street and through my apartment as the figures knees snapped backwards, legs bending and warping into the shape of a wolf’s hind legs with a series of popping sounds.

My breath was now becoming jagged with fear, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

The head rolled back in pain; face still shaded by the hood. I heard the sound of fabric tearing apart as the figure fell forwards to all fours.

Its bones were cracking, body growing and shifting as it whimpered and groaned, almost growling. Clothes peeling off of its shoulders, it yowled into the night as jet black wiry hair sprouted all over its skin. Bones kept shifting, splintering and popping, hair kept growing and it's sounds of pain growing louder and louder until it was standing in the orange glow of the street light in the form of a giant black wolf. It stood, panting for a moment, shoulders hunched as its long, thick hair bristled and waved along its back, nearly sparkling in the light of the street lamp.

I gasped inaudibly as it raised its head, tilting it back and howling. The howl was long and steady, ringing in my ears as it sent sleeping birds in nearby trees screeching and fleeing from the distrubance. It lowered its head again, and I whimpered as it let out a gruesome snarl that was loud enough to echo down the street.

It all happened so fast after that. Its eyes snapped up to mine, every shade of green swimming around its dilated pupils. Its bared teeth were shining in the orange light as I scampered backwards and off the counter, almost falling to the tiled floor as my knees shook. I heard the wolf’s snarls and deep, roaring barks as it scrabbled at the side of the building.

My cat was mewing as I backed out of the kitchen, staring up at me with eyes almost equal to the green of the wolves.

Tears were streaming down my face now, silent sobs tearing at the back of my throat. The sobs became louder as I heard the splintering of wood and the shattering of glass from downstairs. I clenched my eyes closed, gripping to the door frame of the kitchen so hard that my knuckles turned white.

‘It’s inside.’ The sentence kept on replaying through my mind as I turned and ran towards my bedroom. My tears blurred my vision, but I continued my sprint to my room.

Once I was inside I shut and locked the door. I pulled my dressing table to barricade the door, makeup and hair products falling to the floor, breaking and spilling. The wolf was rampaging through the lower level of the house, I could hear things falling and smashing. My arms wrapped themselves tightly around my torso as me body slumped against the wall by the door, slowly sliding to the ground where I curled into the foetal position.

Thump. Crash. Click, click, click... All else was silent as the wolf ascended the stairs, the only thing I could hear was the click of its nails on the hardwood floor and its short, sharp pants.

The image of it walking along the hallway was clear in my mind, body so large the peak of its shoulders were only half a metre away from the ceiling.

Its steeply sloping back, bristling with dark, jet black hair.

Its dinner plate sized feet, matched with talon-like nails pulling at the sides of the carpet that ran the length of the hall.

I could imagine its lip peeling back over its elongated teeth as drool leaked from its mouth, green eyes gleaming in the fluorescent light pouring into the hallway from the kitchen.

My breath caught in my throat as I heard the unmistakable sound of my boyfriend’s beaten up car outside the apartment. He'd been staying at a friends for the game, he was supposed to stay the night.

‘Why are you here? No, Brian. Please no. Leave now, please.’

I strained to hear the wolf, to know where it was, but all movement had stopped; I couldn’t even hear it breathing anymore. Through the thick silence my heart was racing. Brian’s shocked gasp as he reached the front door could be heard loud and clear.

“Amy? Amy? Are you here?”

I started to shale my head to and fro as tears ran thick and fast down my face.

‘No Brian, don’t speak. Brian, why Brian? Why did you speak?’

“Amy? Amy?”

‘Don't let it get you; I don’t want to hear you scream. Where did it go? Where did the wolf go?’

“Amy? God, Amy! Amy, wake up!”

“No, Brian, God no Brian, you shouldn’t have spoken. Don’t speak, it'll get you. Where did it go? Don't speak!” I muttered to myself, still crying.

“Why can’t I speak? Amy? Amy, please open your eyes?”

My eyelids slowly peeled back from my irritated eyes. I was blinking frantically as I tried to focus on something, anything, around me. I wasn’t beside my bedroom door anymore. I wasn’t even in my bedroom.

How? But, the wolf? Brian?

Looking around, I searched for any sign of the wolf. I let out a shaky breath as I saw nothing. It was cut short as my body completely froze up as I felt a slight shift beneath me. Turning my head to the side, I saw the blurry outline of a person. I blinked a few times, my vision slowly becoming clearer. As soon as I saw who the person was, I let out a strangled cry of relief and turned so I could wrap my arms around their shoulders.

“Brian! Fuck, Brian. I thought you were going to die. It was here, I swear it was here! You came home! Why did you come home early? I thought it was going to kill you. Shit, Brian, I love you. Don't let it take you, please don't let it.” I sobbed into his neck. I felt his arms wrap securely around my waist. To make sure he was really there, I ran my fingers through his slightly greasy hair and down his back. After a few minutes of him holding me as I sobbed, trying to touch every part of him for reassurance, he gently pushed me back so he could look at me.

“Oh Amy. Amy, love. It was just a nightmare. It’s okay, I’m here now. Okay? I won't let anything take me away from you. Ever.” My tears slowly started to ease as his deep brown eyes bore into my own, surely bloodshot, blue. My body jolted with shock when there was loud crack and the boom of thunder from outside the window. I glanced out and saw clouds covering the moon and stars. Looking into Brian’s eyes once more, I could have sworn I saw a flash emerald green pass through his irises. He pulled me closer to him and his hands started moving soothingly up and down my back as he whispered to me. "Shh, just go to sleep now, you're safe, nothing can hurt you, or me." I nodded as my head found its place settled on his shoulder again. Me eyes roaming up, I saw that we were sitting on the cold, tiled floor of the kitchen, my peanut butter sandwich sitting a little way in front of me on the floor.

I must’ve fallen asleep by the counter after I made my sandwich. Please, let it just have been a dream.

I shivered as the image of the wolf walking along the hallway flashed through my mind. My body was slowly relaxing as Brian continued to slowly ran his hot, calloused hands up and down my back, whispering comforting words in my ear. What seemed like hours later, I was almost asleep again, my breaths deep but still shaky and my eyes burning from the tears as I lay with my boyfriend on the kitchen floor.
