I've always thought it more likely that some news from the outside world, which was changing so rapidly, showing up on Ennis' radar that would be the catalyst for change, rather than anything someone around him did.

I found myself wondering if Alma wrote that letter. Wouldn't that be a plot twist? :D

Well, I have thought the same thing, and after reading that letter, along came this story pretty quickly... at least the first draft!! [It is complete.] Ennis did lead a somewhat isolated life, but did watch TV and listen to the radio, and kept up on the changing world. Still, no matter what, after 20 years, the changing world had less influence than the fear of the 8-year old child within. then along comes this "letter" in the paper. Others around him did influence him [his father, KE, Aguirre, Alma, Jack], and now others around him will have their influences [OMT, Mrs. T, and still Jack]. So, I guess it's a combination of many things, many ideas, and many places.

Which makes for great discussions and the chance to change endings.

Thanks again.

Hey Bud, Good to see you and read somethig new. Nice to see that Ennis's reaction to the article is to think about it rather than to totally ignore the thoughts and feelings it provoked. Looking forward to the next part.

Well, yes, the combination of the argument and his breakdown in front of Jack, and him stewing in his own thoughts and fears, made him more open to add this train of thought to the inner conversation. I do think that, if Ennis knew Jack would be attached, he would have put aside his fear and responded. So, here he responds when his 20-year relationship had started to crumble. Some stories have him let it happen, and then drift along with regrets, while others [this one] have him finding strength to at least reach out and maybe catch the brass ring as his world goes round and round endlessly.

Thanks again.

Bud.
