Henry James called it "a wonderful mass of life" and I agree. It's a rather beautiful expression of the Russian spirit, and if you've ever known a Russian, you know that they are neither succinct nor efficient. It's also a fairly itnrospective critique of the science of history, although when Tolstoy gets really philosophical in the Epilogue it kind of falls apart a little bit (but only a little bit). He's a much better artist than he is a philosopher.
Of course, many novelists over the years have bemoaned War & Peace's unfocused nature, at least as many as have praised it as the best novel ever. Your mileage may vary.

So how is it anyways? I always assumed a book that long had to be written by someone whose never heard the word efficiency.

Blow, don't rub. You have to blow to get it off. If you rub it'll just go in.

Damn it, I feel like I tool 'cause I never went down to see you during school. Junior year was... well, it was junior year. I'm sure you understand.
Senior year, though, there's like, NOTHING to do. It's all Sea Breezes and lounge chairs for me next year. So something'll definitely happen.
