Japan and the Nonart of the Champloo

Dec 12, 2005 00:27

This is something I wrote freehand in my journal while I was in Rome this past summer after having a conversation with one of my roommates, Erik, about European and Eastern cultures. (Incidentally, Erik was a great guy to talk to because he was a philosophy major at a real school, and he neatly confirmed everything I thought I knew about how ( Read more... )

the first Metal Gear Solid was pretty normal, though, wasn't it? I mean, sure, Psycho Mantis, but it was otherwise a fairly grounded game. none of this cavorting through realms of bizarreness where chicks deflect bullets through the power of improbability and carry around guns that weigh five times as much as they do.

Right.

Also, MGS was crazy. I mean, the whole thing is like a team of supersoldiers, with different themed abilities, Otacon falls in love with Sniper Wolf, he has that long thing about he sort of fell in love with his sister (or was that MGS2?), the plot is insane, also remember when Sniper Wolf shoots Meryl and you have to go all the way back to near the beginning to the armory to pick up the PSG-1 to shoot her back? And she just kind of waits there for you to come back? Even if you know exactly what you're doing, it takes like 10 minutes, and you come back, go prone, shoot up your Diazepam, and she's just running from column to column taking potshots at you like you never left. How videogamey and non-realistic is that? Kojima does stuff like that on purpose.

yeah, I guess it's not nearly so "normal" as I'd remembered. but MGS2 was downright fantastic in the original sense of the word--dwelling in a realm of utter fantasy.

Man, you must be bored, trolling around my ancient LJ posts.

Yeah, it's not that I don't have things to say. It's just that I say them better than I write them. I'm a talker. That, and I work full-time now. When I get back from work I want to play Quest for Glory on GameTap and watch Netflixed movies, not write dissertations on the yin and yang of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo or the degraded state of the American corporate-educational bureaucratic complex.

Maybe, maybe. Manana. (How do you put a tilde over an n? THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW)

That makes you kinda the opposite of most of my online friends, who love writing their thoughts but are terrible at vocal expression.

I feel like I was made to express myself through action movies. I could probably speak more clearly through a theoretical fist fight than with words.
