Is America really so culturally dead that ostensibly intelligent people are bemoaning the fact that the Nightmare On Elm Street remake just "didn't get it right" or "understand the source material correctly"?

In related news I have it on good authority that the Ball In A Cup movie is in pre production.

I stole that joke from the AV club.

The stuff I've heard is more along the lines of: "They didn't get horror or suspense right." That there was no clear distinction of what the audience was supposed to be afraid of. That and the heavy reliance on CG effects to deliver the scares. None of that is effective yet. Did you see Raimi's movie Drag me to Hell? Bleugh.

I think complaining that the film isn't as "good" as the original is missing the real issue. I blame it on the distillation of the Horror Genre over the last 40 years.

I have no idea. I haven't seen it. I can only assume from what people say that it is stupid and not worth my time.

To be honest, I am not much of a movie critic and I don't really care for the "slasher horror" genre, so I am really not their audience. I don't think it really matters what I think.

Rand Paul is saying that the provision of the civil rights amendment that allots the federal government power to intervene in the private sphere is unconstitutional, and should therefore be done away with. He went on to say that, luckily, the provision isn't that useful in doing away with discrimination, and that, in essence, anyone who discriminated in an overt way would likely be run out of business.
Many people on the right and left understand that provisions of the civil rights bill infringe on States Rights ( Matt Taibi is one example). They're simply saying that it's an unlawful way to meet good ends. Those ends can be reached in other ways.
You sound like you get all your news from NPR, or something. I heard all the coverage yesterday too. They didn't provide context and did so knowingly. Rand Paul is a chief proponent of an end to Federal Reserve style banking. Many of the NGO's that fund NPR are directly associated with that banking system.
