Snowboarding question

Does anyone know why do they hold onto the board when they're in the air? They're strapped to the board so is it just a part of the move?

I think it's added difficulty. You have to bring your feet up high enough to grab the board, so grabbing your board as you spin is a more difficult move than just the spin alone.
