"Ma'am?"
Shaz's familiar voice shot through Alex's dream state and drew her reluctant mind towards consciousness.
"Ma'am, wont you wake up?"
She shook her head and frowned, burying her face deep in the hollow of her pillow.
"We need you back. The boys are lost without you and the Gov."
"No," she groaned, trying to call back sleep. This had to stop.
"...I don't know what to do."
Her eyes opened slowly and she rolled over to stare at the ceiling upon hearing the quiet hesitancy in Shaz's voice.
"I miss you - Alex."
She shifted onto her side and stared at the clock on her bedside table, it's bright display making her eyes water in the dark room.
"Alex, I lov - "
White noise overtook the confession before fading out into the song that was airing on the radio. Alex rolled her eyes when she was able to decipher the chorus of Road to Nowhere by Talking Heads.
It didn't matter which voices she listened to - the doctors, or her friends from this other world - no. When she chose a path, someone was going to get hurt. And one of those people was bound to be her.
"I love you too, Shaz." She sighed and heaved herself up to sit against the headboard. "I love you all." That's what makes it so difficult. My heart's pulling me in two directions and if I'm not careful it's likely to split in two.
