Betel Nut is a form of drug. So now your doing drugs. Maybe that is why you were so hung-over. Don't you know not to take candy, drugs or anything else from strangers.....

Tylenol is a drug. Caffeine is a drug.

I was hung over because I drank 6 beers and didn't have any water. :P

Risk of betel nut chewing
Betel nut is chewed regularly by at least 10% of the world population, imported by immigrant users wherever they settle, and is the fourth most widely used addictive substance. It is thought, by users, to soothe the digestion and to be a stimulant and its use has a major role in social situations. Specific arecal alkaloids act as competitive inhibitors of GABA receptors and have widespread effects in the body, including actions on the brain, cardiovascular system, lungs, gut and pancreas. Nitrosated derivatives of arecal alkaloids, proven carcinogens inducing tumors throughout the upper gut and foregut derivatives in animals, are also associated with increased tumor risks in man. Increased central obesity is found in association with betel usage in man as well as increases in circulating markers of inflammatory and cardiovascular damage. The effects of chronic betel usage in man are at least as diverse as those of smoking and the habit increases the risks of ill health.

McDonalds anonymous May 25 2008, 14:20:10 UTC
I was surprised the portions are the same as here. In Japan there all much smaller & no refills. In Italy you had to purchase the ketsup also. Sounds like your having a good time over there. I don't think I'd chew on that yuky nut again though. What is your motel room like..? American style? Do they have paper products in public restrooms? have a good week. ttyl

Try to avoid eating things if you do not know what you are eating. It might look like pork or beef but could be bow wow wow(dog) or even some local delicatesy (chicken asshole or goat penis) I've watched my fair share of Andrew Zimmer's Bizaare Foods.

As far as fruits go: do not eat the fruit, again, unless you know what it is. It could be drugs like the Betel Nut or just something foul like some fruit I saw once on tv that smelled like(and apparently) tasted like someone's dirty toes. Mangoes and bananas are good.

McDonalds even in Australia had smaller portions than our McDonalds. I'm really suprised that the one in Taipai was so normal.

Victoria's Secret = Woman's Secret: They probably don't know who Victoria is because she looks just like all the other American woman. You know, we all look a like.

I wikipedia'd it. One betel nut has less 'drug' effectiveness than a cup of coffee. So unless you had more than 100 of them or sucked on them all day every day; you have nothing to worry about.

They are perfectly legal too. Wikiepedia even stated that one can find betel nuts in most Asian Food Markets.

They just sound gross by your description.

That link should tell you some of the weird stuff you can find to eat in Taiwan. Also, do not eat something called Durian fruit. That's the stuff that supposedly smells like bad farts and tastes like toe jam.
