Poi spinning, it's traditionally done by Maori women but these days is done by weirdo's that use fire (when they're good enough!) I guess you'd call it a performance art/circus skill. Poi are lenthgs of cord with some kind of weights on the end.....fire poi have a kevlar wick that you set fire to obviously!! It looks amazing and is really good fun!!

What book was it you were reading??

a good site to check out to ease any confusion would be http://www.homeofpoi.com/ You can see people doing it on there....altho I'm not sure that there are any vid clips of people using fire unfortunately!
