well i thought it was my 20gig HD, but I've now even tried to do a completly fresh instal to my 120gig drive which only has files on it and the same thing happens. I've swapped out all my ram etc, no difference

(The following may be complete rubbish ;p)

It doesn't sound like a hardware fault...

so it is either a corrupt Windows install, a virus, or a dodgy HDD.

Have you tried putting it in as a slave on Han's PC? (Make sure her virus definitions are up to date, etc). Then run some diagnostics on it to see if there are any errors with the drive. And virus check it?

That way at least you should be able to copy over any files which are important, and then either format or throw your HDD.

Similarly, have you tried H's HDD in your PC? (As a master, without yours). To rule out hardware problems.

Oh, and in case it is a hardware thing ;p. Updated any drivers recently? Try not using your graphics card too.

hmm good plan, will do the above, the one about trying H's hd as a master in mine is a good idea. also virus COULD be a reason, although my virus scanner is always up to date ..but the fact is happend on jan 1st does seem a bit odd.

You have to be more specific when you say "dies".
does the thing blue screen at the login prompt?

I'm surprised it gets that far before it powers off the pc.
The fact the same thing happens in another pc at the same place does suggest its related to whats on the disk but it still could be the disk itself.

i'd say its unlikely to be a corrupt file doing it as usually the loop occurs during boot and it would never hit the login prompt.

If you could get *any* information from either the event logs (if possible, doesnt sound like it) or anything from say a blue screen dump it would be useful. Sometimes you can turn off / restrain certain services in the recovery console and it will allow the pc to boot.

If you want me to take a look at some point gimmie a shout i'll be happy to come over and give it a shot.

really odd thing is I tried to to a clean instal of windows to the bigger drive that nave had a windows instal on it (only a redhat that was on a now removed partition) and it exibited the same problem, wouldn't let me instal windows to the drive. So unless both drives have been affected in some way, I don't see it being the HD itself. It is foxing me this.
