I've seen the original Solaris, in all its plodding, 3+ hour length. There's a 20+ minute sequence where all that happens is a guy rides a bus home. A FUTURISTIC BUS (ie. a bus that makes jet noises). The ending sucks, too... and I'm not saying that because it's not a 'happy' ending or a 'normal' ending... I'm just saying it was a horrible way to end the movie. Basically, skip it.
Before I forget, sorry I haven't sent you those MP3's, because the project just keeps on morphing into something different every time I open up Garageband. (right now it's a 'soundtrack' to something)

Ugh, it's 3 hours long? 20+ minutes on a space bus... are we sure Anno was influenced by 2001? Maybe he was influenced by Solaris! That's why we have the elevator scene! Yes, it makes sense now - ohhh finally we know the truth - it's not because of budget constraints that we get that long static elevator scene - it's homage to another work! It's the way Anno-sama intended! :p
