Ah yes, I've been doing this for a few weeks now. It works ok, though I have a few things I'm still unsure about.
1: the laptop seems to be better at staying cool when open. Sometimes I open it and the screen activates, other times not: I'm not sure how to control this
2: going from disconnected to connected seems complicated. I have to get it all set up, then close the mac, which will cause it to sleep, then wake it up with the keyboard that is now attached? That's always the way it seems to go anyway....
Heh--I've been working in Wave for long enough now that I want to reply inline to each of your points.
I also noticed the laptop was running hot while closed. I figured it was because it was tucked into a fairly enclosed nook in my desk? Haven't done enough taking it out of "docked" position yet for the screen to stay dark on me.
However, what you're describing for "docking" the laptop sounds consistent with what I've read. By default the laptop thinks it's going to sleep when you close the lid and the only way to wake it up while closed is to use the external keyboard or mouse while the laptop is closed and plugged in to wake it back up.
I was doing this a couple years ago. I got around the heat problem by elevating the laptop. i think i used a few spare altoid tins. With a half-inch or so underneath, there's much better circulation and it doesn't have nearly the likelihood of overheating.
