Motorpsycho Nitemare

The bike went in for its 24,000-mile service yesterday and the shop lent me an F800S for the day. Brand new, and a cute little thing - I called it a mini-moto but BMW prefers "entry level sportsbike". Having enquired, I'd been assured that it featured an accessory socket, and plugged myself in before setting off home. Before the first traffic ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear about your Beemer Bother...I was getting rather ratty with my car a while back but it managed to make me love it again, despite the money spent on it. Unlike the Escort, it was worth it!

I do not know what the Japanese do to their engines that makes them not break down but if I could harness that quality I would be a rich man!

Keep us posted on it's progress!

Building them to microscopic tolerances is the secret, apparently. Japanese quality control is just orders of magnitude beyond Europe's. I don't really see how this makes exhaust valves burn out though. The shop says they've had a few bikes of mine's age with the same problem and suspect a bad batch of alloy. I guess that's another aspect of quality control.

It's really annoying that I had the same problem on the other cylinder last September. Logic tells us that the second one would go soon too, but being a Boxer engine, dismantling to investigate would have doubled the cost of the repair.

Things have come to a pretty pass if German engineering is less reliable than Japanese.

The Nexus has suffered no ill effects post-service bar a strong smell of WD-40, but I will be thrashing it thoroughly at the weekend just to be sure.

The one bright spot in this sorry saga is that the breakdown happened within van-range of CW's, and not on some French motorway. A pre-trip thrash still seems like a good plan, though. As you say, just to be sure.
