An excerpt and link, brought on by Race Fail '09

I haven't gone thoroughly into the background of Race Fail '09, though what I have become aware of is pretty upsetting. What it's gotten me to do is raise my awareness of issues and I think one important piece about privilege overall, not specifically related to this incident, is White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh. Excellent post. As you know, I have very much wanted to post about this topic, but have been lacking in energy. Here are some more links which I think are really useful for anyone trying to educate themselves on this topic.

The Problem With "I Don't See Color" - geared toward educators regarding issues with the "colorblind" philosophy a la Stephen Colbert.

Color Blind or Just Plain Blind - great description of overt vs aversive racism. This was a real eye-opener for me.

Finally, related directly to RaceFail: Some Advice For White Fans Who Have Only Recently Encountered RaceFail.

I'm hoping to post these to my own LJ when I feel a bit better. ♥

Very interesting. Being a Women's Studies Major myself and a half-indian adopted child into a white family....I have an interesting [perspective. I went to a white catholic school for a few years where I was spit on and otherwise beaten up for no reason...then I ended up in an inner city school where I was jumped regularly by different people. This is why I'm so nutty about being able to fight well.

I have a lot to say about this. :D I don't post much about it these days because I did so years ago on my LJ before we met. But yeah...

Yeah, a major SF/F authors on the internet drama. Summaries and links abound in some of our mutual friends' journals & blogs. My spouse, autumnyte, who has read up on it a lot more than I have, feels this is possibly the best summary.

Wow on the drama.

Society is basically going to end up like in Demolition Man or Kage Baker's The Company novels, isn't it?
