Life was settling into place, even though the fervor and jubilation of the new year was still on everyone’s minds.  The world was crumbling, really.  But no one could see it.  Thinking about the last long while that I’ve even thought about politics, it’s a scary place we live in now.

You are lucky that you got out when you did. They are planning on suspending the 'tour of duty' so that they can just keep a bunch of units in Iraq.
