Sensitive female chord progression? ... Really?

ceida pointed me to this interesting article in the Globe. My initial reaction was that it is a ridiculous name for what is just a sequence of sounds, but since there are so many songs that reuse a comparatively small set of chord progressions, I thought it would be an interesting, if only academic, exercise (which I have not done) to construct an ( Read more... )

Not tangential at all. That segment just blew my mind. I'd love to see how their program separates out the melody/harmony/chord progression, but I'm guessing that's a well-protected proprietary algorithm. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it's my favorite Talk of the Nation in recent memory. I have always fantasized about researching what makes pop music "work." When I first listened to it, I really wanted to be able to listen to the songs that fit one of the archetypes, but for whatever reason did not "succeed."

I agree, that's got to be a very interesting data set. Like what are the distinguishing factors of each of the clusters of hits? How many clusters are there? Can any (human) sense be made of why clusters are where they are (do they fit into a taxonomy?), or are they just crunching numbers? Too bad they're not publishing their results =(.
