Super-Short Stories

Jan 23, 2009 13:02

Running out of ideas to be all weepy and emo...
So i will try to keep my stories short, within one entry.
This way, i won't have to make you guys sit through episodes of it.
I am after all not a supporter of soap drama, like a recent "Miniscule Nokia" series.

Here goes...

23rd January, Friday, 9pm
Drenched in rain and her own tears, Megan picks up the phone receiver and dials a number she could never forget. The phone returns an engaged tone. Megan replaces the receiver with her shivering hands. Then she steps out of the booth and trudges back in to the rain and cold.

24th January, Saturday, 5pm
Megan steps out onto the rooftop level of block 335B beside Chinatown Complex. As she peers down at the throngs of people below her in Trengganu Street, she cannot help but notice the various conversations in the crowd.

"Mommy!"
"Yes, honey?"
"Let's get this jelly dessert, its really nice."
"OK"

"Darling, try this blouse for mommy to see."
"Can i don't wear that? It looks horrendous..."
"Just for new year, darling. Ok?"
"Ok..."

As she silently tears, Megan walks away from block 335B and disappears into the crowd of festive shoppers.

25th January, Sunday, 7pm
Gingerly picking up the receiver, Megan tries the number for the last time. This time the call connects, and after a couple of rings, she hear's a familiar voice.

"Hello"
"... ..."
"Hello, this is Mrs Chan speaking. Who's that?"
"... mom..."
"Hello? Megan? Is that you?"
"Mommy, i'm sorry..."
"Megan!? Where have you been, dear?"
"I'm sorry mom..."
"Its ok, dear. Where are you now? Come home now dear. Mommy and daddy misses you."
"Mommy, i'm sorry. I've disappointed you and daddy."
"Don't say that dear. Come home now. We can talk again when you are at home. Where are you? Shall Mommy go and pick you?"
"... ..."
"Megan, don't scare mommy. Come home now."
25th January, Sunday, mid-night
Cheesy Chinese New Year music blast through the night sky, punctuated with exploding firecrackers along New Bridge Road. Hoards of shoppers in the Chinatown district wish each other a properous lunar new year ahead. Nobody notices a lone girl hiding in the corner of Emerald Garden, wailing to herself.

26th January, Monday, 5am
A worried Mrs Chan paces in front of her gate, looking expectantly at both sides of her street. Eventually she catches a glimpse of a familiar silhouette.

An elated mother runs towards her child.

"Hi mommy... I'm home. And... happy new year..."
