Green Party: 940,000 voters supporting the Green Party sent no one to Parliament, setting a new record for the most votes cast for any party that gained no parliamentary representation.

By comparison, 813,000 Conservative voters in Alberta alone were able to elect 27 MPs.

One person = one badly blown out of proportion vote or no vote at all! What else do you want? :)

I second it! I voted yes on the electoral reform that was on the very first election I ever voted for. I had to look up what it meant, because I didn't understand it. It wasn't perfect, but it was certainly better than it is now!!!!!

As you know, I was not in favour of the electoral reform Ontario was presented with recently but I am in full agreement with you, something must none the less be done. Among other things, the drawing of the electoral map for the prairies and BC is long overdue. It has not been done to account for the population boom of the last ~10 years (I'm thinking in particular of Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Kelowna but not exclusively). The cities west of Ontario in particular I find have been shortchanged. Vancouver's eastside today is not what it was in the mid-90's, neither is it's Chinatown. The population is differently dispursed and beyond that, in theory, the ridings are drawn to capture groups of people thought of as sharing similar cultural/microlevel concerns, and this is clearly not the case (I doubt it ever was but I feel this has gotten worse ( ... )

I agree with you about MMP and, unfortunately I feel the same about STV, which is the system being proposed in BC. STV REALLY REALLY sucks for rural areas, because unless they double the size of the legislature (which would be expensive and not possible because there is no room) they would have to double the size of ridings to have multi-member ridings... which would be expensive and complicated to serve.

This election is more proof than ever that some kind of proportional representation is not just required but essential. When you view the percentages, it's just insane.

You know, if you haven't already you really should friend felis_ultharis - I don't normally try and foist friends on each other but sometimes the two of you make political posts that are almost word-for-word the same. He posted one almost identical to this after the last election.
