Well, THQ UK responded quickly, and have run down an extensive list of suggestions for me.... none of which have worked.

Still, kudos to them for being responsive and polite.

At the end of the day, it is experiences like this which make me believe PC gaming really is dead, and reach for my xbox controller.

Nah, PC gaming's not dead - in fact it's seen a resurgence in the past year or so, although this is largely down to MMOGs such as World of Warcrap. Personally I find joypads absolutely shite for first-person games too (even after you've adjusted to them) - you may as well wear mittens during play. Then there's the (generally much higher) price of console games.

I'm not saying consoles are bad (the 360 is a lovely bit of kit), just that they have their own obvious limitations.

MMORGs are for people who don't have a life or a job.

Most console games are FPS, in fact I'm bored with them and want something different - although joypads aren't very good for RTS either, you can (with a bit on ingenuity) come up with new control schemes for both. I found Prey on the 360 ridiculously easy by comparison with Far Cry for example - and that wasn't down to weapon accuracy but AI and maps, for which Far Cry is far (sic) superior.

Also, console games are only expensive because of that monopolistic cartel feature of region encoding - which most 360 games can be bought without if you buy them offshore. And they're not as expensive as my time is ;-)

I'm just fed up to the back teeth of juggling drivers to get a game working then finding it has stopped others from doing so.

I played the C&C 3 Demo on the 360. It's not *quite* there in terms of interface, mostly I think because of the lack of buttons. However! Playing Catan, I finally played a game that uses the controller like a chorded keyboard. And I'd truely like to see that in another game, just to see how it works, if nothing else.

Actually, one of the best uses of the Joypad I've seen was in Jade Empire, a lovely well crafted game.
