Oh man... if you hate that arrogant attitude and false hubris, you're going to positively "love"... [that other place you were going to interview at].

The best part about it there is that it's sorta under the surface... so it'll be interesting to see if you notice it upon interviewing there.

As... someone who joined very recently, upon we were talking about why they were doing something that was entirely stupid and a waste of time, said: "[that other place you were going to interview at]: because we're all geniuses here!"

I decided not to interview there. I have declared that MV is the outer limit of my commute. Palo Alto was just too far.

Not bitter, though! johnreen December 2 2005, 19:35:55 UTC
MOST PEOPLE WOULD MOVE ACROSS THE WORLD TO WORK FOR [that other place you were going to interview at] BECAUSE THEY'RE SO WONDERFUL TO WORK FOR AND THEY'RE ALL SO SMART!

Err... *cough*... sorry about that.

Probably a good decision in the end.

So I was just reading an article in forbes today about google and their interviewing process, it sounded lame and rather childish. And the article about them definately reeked of 'eau de Netscape' or perhaps the tolitte water version of it.
Those wings melt baby! There must be somewhere nicer you'd like to work don't you think?

(by the way you aren't suggesting *we* aren't geniuses though are you?)

I've had a couple more days to think about it, and essentially I screwed up the interview 6 ways from Sunday. I shoulda had it, but like I said, it's better that I didn't.

I'm not saying that we weren't geniuses. What I'm saying is that the feeling of invulnerability and "we're so cool we have to pinch ourselves every morning" is a very dangerous place to be. Maybe they can keep it up. But I doubt it.

It sounds like their interview process protects good people from working there. :)

those wax wings melt eventually... and I don't think that kind of environment is sustainable for anyone, a recipe for burnout at best.

Any hiring process that requires you to cough up your college GPA is fucked up.

Salon.com also had a blurb about Google, but this one fawning what an awesome place it is for women. http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/index.html?blog=/mwt/broadsheet/2005/12/06/google/index.html

I cited your experience in their comments section (with no particular attribution).
