I looked up Beardsley's stuff and whoa that's pretty cool. If you can pull it off, go for it! But if not, your own style works pretty well too. :B
I also think it's cool that your Asian grandpa knew French. XD I sucked at the language but I am still fond of it. Sorta. It's always weird thinking about how older generations led such "exciting" lives when we're (well I guess I can't really speak for you haha)... just not as exciting heh.
And yay kiriban! Don't worry, I'm even worse than you. ;)
I just feel like I need to try something new and the prompt was a perfect for it. ^^ If I can't pull it off, yeah, there's always my usual style. Hehehehe

It's awesome to have such a close family member as such an inspiration. I must admit I'm a bit envious of people who have family members who are great artists, not that there aren't people with artistic talent in my family but I'm the "pioneer" who decided to go to art school and make a pathetic attempt at living off of art.
It also means when I go home I have no one to talk to about things that matter to me, they'll listen to about 5 minutes of art talk, nod their heads and try to pretend they understand, and they go change the topic to something I have no clue about.
Discouragement of art as a career seems to be a common thread in every family somewhere. My family didn't exactly discourage me but they did have no clue whatsoever about all the different things you can do as an artist, and therefor thought that's something you shouldn't do for a job. Even after I decided I was going to art school, my mother kept bring up being a math teacher to me (I was advanced in math, so my mother always thought I should do something with that, but I would never ever ever want to be a math teacher
