Your answer was one of the few ones I'd fully agree with. There also were some 'sympathizer' who wrote that zoos had to be prohibited. Huh! How can people answering questions about animals be so ignorant in things concerning animals! There are dozens of species now SAVED through breeding new generations in zoos, they would get extincted long ago without zoos. Okay, no matter, let call them 'conservation centers'.- Well, too emotional.)) Nice to meet you! May I add you to my friends?)) Maria Russia
Thank you - it always amazes me how people are ignorant regarding animal matters. I'm lucky in that I studied biology at degree level, and my husband studied zoology, so we have a fairly good understanding. Also, I've seen major changes for the better over the years in zoos, so I'm sympathetic to what they do for conservation these days.
Thank you! And with your biological / your husband's zoological background, you must surely know about Gerald Durrell and his great Wildlife Conservation Trust (now managed by his widow, Mrs. Lee Durrell, so far I know). It was him, from whom I first learnt about the real idea of zoos - as conservation centers. I started reading his books at 6 (translated into my native language, of course), and I'm almost 38 now - and still read and re-read them in all languages I can.)) Have a nice time there!
Oh yes - we know of Gerald Durrell - the husband has a few of his books too. Talking books, there's a lovely one by the late Douglas Adams and the zoologist Mark Carwardine who went in search of species on the brink of extinction.
