More like, if someone ACTUALLY values someone as a friend - not just a group bandwagon rider - then make it apparent and known. If they are just "filler" in your life then let things lie.

That's actually one of the things that bothers me most about all this, is that the looser ties within the network are being strained. People could make an effort and overcome that, but i doubt it'll happen. IMO when people aren't good friends they need connections to be formed by accident. For example, I've known Din for many years and love him dearly. He's a great guy, but it's not like you'll ever call him and ask him out for coffee so you can find out about that. In small select groups, there won't be the chance for the accidental connection that would make you guys really learn to know and respect each other. How will filler friends become real friends now? Seems unlikely.
