A few weeks back I swung by CD Game Exchange and acquired two CDs from the $2.50 bin.
First I spent $2.50 to acquire the Barenaked Ladies album
Gordon. I pretty much spend the money to get "Be My Yoko Ono" and "If I Had a $1000000". There are a few other good cuts - "Box Set" and "Brian Wilson" knock my $ per cut down under iTunes - but this album would have been greatly improved if it has been cut to 10 cuts from the current 15.
The second album was less of a known quantity. Victoria Williams is a female singer songwriter who is probably best known for a tribute album called
Sweet Relief her friends put together when she was diagnosed with MS. The tribute album is really good and features Lucinda Williams, Pearl Jam, The Jayhawks and Lou Reed, among others. I had never managed to actually listen to any of her albums, so I took a flier on
Loose. I am glad I did. This is a solid disc featuring many guest artists and some very good lyrics.
I had long ago decided that I wished to acquire a CD by Mike Doughty. When I saw him in concert a few week's back I opted to purchase
Haughty Melodic. I will get some of his other solo works in the future. This album has 12 cuts. 6 are top-flight, and 5 of the others are pretty good. My personal favorite is Unsingable Name, but it might be Tremendous Brunettes.
Finally, I rewarded the Constantines for their amazing show by purchasing their third release,
Shine a Light. This CD is awesome. It starts our rough and unpolished and loud, then as the tracks click by it becomes more and more polished and accessible. I love it.
My only music complaint right now is that part of the plastic that holds my headphones on my head broke, so they simply can't be worn. I switched to the iPod ear buds, but they *SUCK*. Seriously, I find them completely unwearable. Maybe I just have small ears but they constantly fall out when I put them in, which forces me to really jam them painfully far into my ear to get them to stay in. Worse, every time I put them in the angle is slightly different so I have to readjust the volume to compensate, and if I don't get both ears to the same angle one ears get blasted while the other can't hear at all. I hate them and I really don't understand how anyone can bring themselves to use them. I realize I am in a distinct minority here, but that is how I feel. Hopefully this weekend I will have time to superglue my old headphones back together, or failing that I will go buy a cheap pair at Best Buy to tide me over.
