tigerlily_blue got me a big stack of graphic novels for my birthday. Chief among these were volumes 2 through 4 of Y: The Last Man. I had
previously noted how much I enjoyed the first volume, and I am even more pleased to say that volumes two through four far surpassed the first one.
Brian Vaughan has written a piece of absolutely first rate science fiction that is fully deserving of all the awards it has racked up.
The plot, in brief: Every male mammal on the planet has died in the space of a second for reasons unknown, with the exceptions of Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand. Soon thereafter he is on a road trip across America with a mysterious secret agent, 355, and a talented scientist, Dr. Allison Mann. He is pursued by Israeli commandos and an uber-feminist group called, logically enough, the Amazons. They encounter all sorts of messed up post-disaster societies, and get tangled up with a Russian spy who is trying to ensure the safety of two men who survived on the space station. All this happens with well staged action, impeccable dialog, a great deal of humor and absolutely the best Preacher reference I've seen. I strongly recommend it. The next volumes have moved to the top of the list of things I want to acquire.
