The Who must have been on to something, because because somewhat unbelievably this is the
fifth home opener entry I've written. Five years of hope reborn on a chilly day in Cleveland. Fortunately, this year wasn't nearly as chilly as
the blizzard opener last year. Instead, we had very nice fifty degree weather with no precipitation as the Tribe out slugged the Chi Sox 10 to 7. Initially it seemed like 1995 all over again as
Jim Thome hit two two run homers, but as he now plays for the Chi Sox. Fortunately, the Tribe's bats woke came our roaring.
Pronk the pride of North Dakota, hit an RBI double, Franklin Gutierrez hit a three run homer, and
Grady Sizemore, the heartthrob of thousands of teenage girls, hit a solo shot.
MM has accompanied me to most of these openers, but this will probably be the last as he is almost certainly moving in the coming months. Me, I'll still be there next year. Even years like this one, when my Oakland A's threw in the towel before spring training even started, can't damp my belief in Opening Day. "Throwing in the towel" is the technical term for unloading your
all-star pitcher, your
clutch hitting super infielder, and your
moneyball outfielder because you don't have the money to sign them and stay competitive in the long term. Why do I follow a sport where having a lot of money is really an advantage? Hell if I know, but it does something for me. Maybe it's the consistency. A whole hell of a lot has changed in the last five years, mostly for the better, but baseball is essentially the same. Thank goodness.
