I've got a gift card burning a hole in my pocket...

Specifically, I have a $50 gift certificate for Westlake's premiere comic emporium, Astound that my lovely wife got me as a wedding gift.

Last month I used a Borders gift card from the last holiday season to acquire the final volume of Y: The Last Man. Although it did not wrap up all the loose ends in a satisfactorily manner (where'd the rats come from?) I generally enjoyed the ending and thought it a fitting conclusion.

The only other series that I'm working on acquiring at the moment is 100 Bullets. I've only got volume 1 at the moment, and will probably at least get volume 2. I could certainly spend all $50 acquiring the next 3 or 4 trades, but I'm hoping that someone out there can recommend something new to me. To aid in that process, here's a list of some of my favorites.

  1. My all time favorite is Preacher. My wedding ring has "until the end of the world" engraved inside it, and that phrase was in our vows instead of "to death do us part", as xhollydayx is also a big Preacher fan.
  2. I'm a big fan of Sandman. I have most of the spinoff titles that I want to acquire, including all the Deaths, and all of Lucifer. The only thing left I really want is The Dreaming: Beyond the Shores of Night, which is out of print and therefore can't be ordered at Astound! easily.
  3. Transmetropolitan is marvelous.
  4. I've always liked film noir, so Sin City was right in my wheelhouse.
  5. The only really unusual thing in my collection that people might not have heard of is Thieves & Kings, a black & white independent comic by Mark Oakley. Trades are released rarely, but when they are I get them immediately.
  6. Like everyone else, I read and enjoyed the usuals favorites like Dark Knight Returns, Watchman, V For Vendetta. Kingdom Come didn't do much for me, but I have that too.
  7. I liked the first two volumes of LXG well enough, but due to some negative reviews I got v.3 from the library. The negative reviews were right. It is definitely subpar.
  8. I have a big stack of Hellblazer, which I generally enjoy, and I can see acquiring more trades of that.
  9. I don't generally acquire superhero comics, as I find that I don't get as much pleasure from re-reading them. If I did, Ultimate Spiderman would jump to the top of my list, as would any number of Batman trades.
  10. I've also read, but mostly do not own, vast quantities of X-Men, DareDevil, Punisher, Blade & Batman.
  11. I also have both of the War Stories trades.

I realize that in many ways this list is basically a 'comics greatest hits' list. Consider this your opportunity to expand my horizons.

Some titles I've considered:
Fables - but the spinoff I read, Jack of Hearts, was merely ok.
Ex Machina - after Y The Last Man, Brian Vaughan's other efforts deserve some attention.
Invincible looks entertaining.

Any ideas?
