I'm from North Dakota...

and I'm used to ridiculously cold temperatures. Temperatures that never got above freezing December through February were practically the norm, and we usually had a week or two where it never got above 0 degrees F. Fortunately, it was only a two block walk to school.

When I got to Cleveland for college I had to walk much farther on any given day, but it was rarely, if ever, that cold. A light jacket was all I needed, and my super heavy duty stuff stayed at home in my parent's closet, where it lives to this day on the off-chance that I visit them in December. This includes my winter parka (good for shoveling the driveway at -40F) and my ubergloves, which are, no joke, gloves inside mittens for those days when your hands need lots of insulation.

I wish I had them this morning. -10 F. My fur lined leather gloves, which I normally use only for shoveling because my hands overheat otherwise? Ineffective. My hands were numb within 5 minutes while walking the dog. Tulip was obviously unhappy when I walked her so we had the shortest walk on record. I gave her 15 minutes to warm up and then let her out on the lead to use the bathroom, and she stayed within 6 inches of the door for two minutes before I relented and let her back in. Hopefully when her bladder pressure starts to increase she'll be willing to make a run for it. If not, I'm not even sure I'll blame her.

Thank goodness for the newly installed insulation in the attic. Because of it the upstairs is reasonably warm, especially with the space heater, but the basement is an icebox (no radiators down there) and the first floor is chilly.

So anyway, if you've always wondered why I think Cleveland is warm, imagine having weather like today for weeks or even months on end and you'll start to grok it.
