No Home Opener This Year

I didn't go to the Home Opener this year, burned one too many times by miserable weather, and now by a lack of companions inclined to join me. Naturally, it was bright and sunny and gorgeous. Instead of watching baseball, I gave blood at Dave & Buster's and watched all the festivities on a really big projector screen.

More regrettable is that Ernie Harwell, long time Detroit Tigers broadcaster, is dead. I'm not from Michigan so I don't hold his voice in religious awe, but the man was the best at what he did. A Bible verse is appropriate, specifically Song of Solomon 2:11-12, which he used to recite on the very first broadcast of spring training every year.

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear on the earth;
the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;

You can read his HOF induction speech here. His most amazing accomplishment might well have been that he and his wife had been married for 69 years at the time of his death - they got married in 1941.

Man, I really should have gone to the opener.
