Dog Update

Tulip caught a bird tonight on our walk. Well, maybe caught isn't the right word. We were walking alone when I saw what appeared to be a dead bird on the grass by the sidewalk. I quickly moved to rein in Tulip before she could nab it, but she managed to stretch out and pick it up, at which point it stopped playing dead and started struggling madly. Fortunately for the bird, Tulip was so shocked by this that she released it even before I could tell her to leave it, so it wandered off slowly with one hell of a story to tell its buddies. It was very small and looked like a wading bird of some kind (maybe a plover?); certainly it wasn't a bird I'd seen in our neighborhood before.

When we got back home, I changed the sheets on the bed. I got the fitted sheet on the mattress when Tulip and Hamlet decided that it was an ideal time to race up and down the stairs. This is nearly a nightly occurrence, and well worth watching. Typically Tulip sprints down the stairs, hits the landing and spins, then sprints back up the stairs. She runs into the bedroom and jumps on the bed, spins and does the whole thing all over again, usually with her tongue hanging all the way out the entire time. Hamlet follows her at his maximum speed, which is really slow, so he mostly just runs between the bed and the stairs and barks enthusiastically. Tonight the formula played out as usual, except that the 7th or 8th time Tulip jumped on the bed her front claws caught the sheet and ripped two long parallel slits in it. Goodbye sheet. Oh well, she hasn't destroyed anything recently so I guess she was due.

Thankfully, Hamlet hasn't managed to destroy anything recently. In fact, he's gotten to the point that we can leave him out of the kennel if we leave for a few hours, as long as he goes to bathroom first. Last night he spent most of the evening curled up in jackthebodyless's lap demanding attention, which he excels at.

Hamlet's most recent excitement has to do with coats. Being a dog of very little fur or flab, he's getting a bit chilly now that the temperatures are dropping. One of my coworker's gave us two coats that didn't fit his dog, and bec76 and zodarzone kicked in another coat that was too small for Ditko. In classic fairy tale fashion, one coat was too big, another was too small, and one was just right. So now Hamlet has a fabulous red Lands End (really!) sweater vest that makes him look vaguely like a big red bratwurst. It's not suited for walks (no hole for a leash or waterproofing) so xhollydayx will get to buy him an outside coat at some point in the future.

All this free entertainment and 90 minutes of dog walking a day keeps me from getting too much fatter. What more could a guy want?
