Wish List for Birthday/Holiday 2011

Nov 04, 2011 22:16

When I was a kid, getting my mother or father to tell us what they wanted for their birthday was nigh impossible. This drove ten-year-old me nuts. How could you not know what you wanted for your birthday? There were so many awesome toys and books that keeping the list manageable was a more daunting problem. Inevitably my parents would think of a thing or two (besides the default of "hugs and kisses") and it would be over.

Nearly a 1/4 century later, I finally understand it a little better. After all, now I've got a job and disposable income, and if there's something that I really, really want I could go out and buy it myself. If it's something I can't buy for myself, there's no way my family could get it for me anyway. So making a list seems to be a little strange to me. However, since they've been (mostly) gracious enough to provide lists for this year's festivities, I've thrown together a list of stuff I'm sort of interested in owning but probably wouldn't buy for myself.

Kitchen
- An immersion blender. As suggested by babymonkey some time back.
EDIT 11/16 - YAY. My sister got me one!
- A food processor. My ex got our old one.
EDIT 11/14 - Holy fuck. Eli sent me a food processor!
- An apron? I'm not sure if I'd ever remember to wear it though.
EDIT 10/24/12 - Mom got me one. I even wear it sometimes.
- A slow cooker? We had a crock pot but it was hers. We didn't use it all that much though, but I think that was partially because it was a one-piece (aka, hard to clean) and not very big.
- An enamel dutch oven? I make a lot of soups, and all the recipes say to use one. I'm not sure that it makes a difference, but there you have it.
- Tapas: Creative Cooking. The cookbook I used for our first supper club has a lot of things that I still want to try in it.
EDIT 10/24/12 - I bought it for myself.
- My sister keeps telling me about this awesome curry cookbook, which sounds promising. I'm sure she can leave the name in the comments.

Apparel
- An Oakland Athletics Jersey, preferably a Rickey Henderson #24 although Dave Stewart's #34 would be perfectly acceptable. Ideally a dark green one or a white one. Failing that, a t-shirt.
- A new pair of slippers. Preferably one that is Tulip-proof, if possible. Hah.
EDIT 12/24 - My parents got me a pair. We'll see if they are Tulip-proof.
- A US Olympic Hockey Team Jersey, 1980 Miracle on Ice edition. I don't think you can put player names on them, but Neal Broten wore #9. What? I already have a Fighting Sioux jersey.

Comics
- Thieves & Kings #6
- Dreaming TPB. My 2002 self says thank you.
- Bone, by Jeff Smith - I've been getting the colorized trades. Volume 3 and onward.
- Bloom County Babylon

Music
- Josh Ritter - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
EDIT 10/24/12 - I bought it the last time I saw him.
- Operation Ivy - Energy
- The Hitsville USA box set covering Motown 1959-1971.
EDIT 11/28 - Thanks Mom & Dad!
- The Mekons - Heaven & Hell, Rock & Roll

Other
- A copy of Settlers of Catan and somebody to play it with.
- A print of Orpheus by Odilon Redon suitable for framing, or maybe even framed already!

So what gift are you looking for?

wish
