Metalheads are Awesome
I covered Radio Child yesterday at midnight, which is a new metal show one of the students is doing. Thanks to safe harbor, profanity was fair game so I didn't even have to preview all that much. I decided I'd play bands I'd heard of but focus on tracks that I was less familiar with.
For years I've maintained that if you play three metal songs in a row on WRUW, the phone calls will start pouring in. People laugh at this, but it's basically true. Cleveland has a devoted metal scene, and given the slightest bit of encouragement they'll ask for all their favorites. Sure enough, I was maybe 20 minutes into the show when I noticed the first email request. The phones started ringing shortly after even though I didn't give out the phone number. I ended up playing four of them; several that arrived toward the end of the show didn't make it in. For even more awesomeness, I decided I was only going to play vinyl, and when I said that on the air the age of the songs requested moved back in time appropriately.
So if you absolutely positively have to get somebody to call in with requests - play some metal.
