Supposedly the average American eats out five times a week. I don't know how many of those are for fast food, but I've got to assume it's a big number given how expensive other restaurants are in comparison. As I've
mentioned before, I eat very little fast food. I'm more than a little smug about this. In fact, I'm so smug I can list all of the fast food I eat in an average year right here:
The annual trip that my father and I take to the
Boundary Waters hits 2 of the 3 guaranteed fast food excursions of the year. On the way home after the trip, we always stop at the Pizza Hut in
Hibbing for dinner. A few hours later we stop at the Dairy Queen in
Fosston for some ice cream. In years past we also used to get ice cream at the Dairy Queen in
Ely the night before we hit the
water, but in recent years we've skipped that stop.
So what's the third fast food occasion? Every year around this time my manager buys everyone on his team a
Shamrock Shake at McDonald's. Yesterday was the day for this year. In a sign that we're all getting older, or possibly just more sensible, several of our team members simply declined them outright as they're trying to eat healthier or work out. Just as well; it looks like one Shamrock shake has 550 calories.
Beyond that, very occasionally I eat at Chipotle. In years past that would happen more often, but it was still mostly paid for by work. In recent years it hasn't really happened at all, although I'm still tempted occasionally since there is one right by my house and it is damn tasty. Once in a great while I'll duck into Subway, but we're talking something like once every two years.
Hey, I'm entitled to be smug about something occasionally, right?
