Bike Update

My stated goal for the summer is to bike twice a week until it's too cold to continue, and to make it to 1000 miles. That would put me at a minimum of 58 commutes. Right now, I'm at 20, for 350 miles, which puts my bicycling Hobbit just past the Trolls and within a few rides of Rivendell, which coincidentally is the name of a bike shop.

This means that I'm 4 rides off my twice/week pace. One week was lost to April weather, and a second to my vacation. My summer schedule makes it challenging to get more than 2 rides a week; Tuesday and Wednesday are already committed to ultimate and gaming so I'm effectively forced to bike two times in three days while hoping for no storms, which is doable but doesn't give much leeway to make up ground. Once ultimate ends in August I expect to get caught up.

If I can manage it, July would actually be a better time to get caught up, as my employer has deemed July "Bike to Work" month, with various incentives for riding in. There's no way I can win "most times biked to work" because I have coworkers who live less than a mile from the office; it's probably actually faster for them to bike. However, I may have a shot at "most miles biked to work" as there's only one person I'm aware of who comes from farther away than I do. Of course, if he rides once he covers almost as many miles as I do in three rides (50 miles for him, 51.5 for me), but he only goes for once a week and if he misses a week I'm out in front. My biggest concern is that precious spots in the bike rack will be gone due to more people biking in, but if it comes down to it there are trees and sign posts.

So far the worst problem I had was a day when no matter how hard I peddled it felt like I was moving through quicksand. It turns out that I had somehow broken two spokes on the rear tire, which meant the tire was rubbing against the brake constantly. The team at Spin fixed that. A few weeks later I went in to get my grips adjusted and Mitch found another broken spoke, which he fixed gratis. Spin is pretty awesome that way. Other than that, I've got no problems to report.

As far as I personally am concerned, my weight has been stable at just over 220. My cardio health is fantastic (I've had zero problems at ultimate) and my knee isn't any worse than normal. I'm definitely keeping this workout until it is too cold.
