6 years and a day ago I
joined Facebook. Since then I've spent a lot of time on Facebook. Most of that time has been enormously enjoyable. I keep up with my friends at at least a surface level (and often more). I've learned an awful lot from links my friends post (it helps to have smart and interesting friends). I've found out about concerts, movies and a bunch of other events that I wouldn't otherwise have known about. On the whole, I think it's been a net win.
With that said, I do feel like I spend a lot more time on there than I really need to. It's too useful for me to go cold turkey, so I'm going to try a more restrained method. For the next few months at least I'm going to only check Facebook on weekends. A coworker did this with pretty good results so we'll see what happens. I will make exceptions for things like "contact a friend who has indicated that Facebook is the best/only way to contact them" or "what time did the invite say again?" but thankfully those cases are rare.
My main hope is that this will free up more time for reading. We'll see what happens.
And as to how I'll implement this? Easy. I just take the FB shortcut out of my "Communications" folder :-)
