Review: Matt Harnish Live in My Living Room!

May 30, 2016 10:33

I was bound to host a house concert that was poorly attended at some point, and regrettably Matt Harnish was it. Heck, because unbeknownst to me Matt brought along an opening act, for a while it looked like the bands would nearly match the audience. Fortunately, that didn't happen, but only barely. Our attendance was:

The Bands
Matt
Googolplexia (aka, Rob)

The Hosts
Me
Brandt, host of "The Cream of Broccoli Radio Hour" (late)

Guests
M
Lily, host of "Sweet and Lowdown"

And that was it. Despite many other "maybes" and a few other "yeses", we had four people in the audience, and Brandt actually missed Googolplexia's opening act. Heck, even Tulip was not there because I was flying to Texas the next morning and had already dropped her off at overnight care.

It's a shame everyone missed it, because the show was a lot of fun. Googolplexia is sort of a low budget Weird Al, complete with Hawaiian shirt. He did a lot of weird short songs on a variety of instruments, including something accordion like. Then Matt came on and performed some of his own songs, some Bunnygrunt songs, and to Lily's unending delight, a Sparks song. (Lily loves Sparks).

The show completed, we hung out and chatted for some time. We may have only had six people, but we did kill a lot of alcohol (21 by my count). At one point we stood out in the driveway and did beer out of the octo-bong (eight legs). I threw some money at their well stocked merch table. Most notably, I now have a tour t-shirt with my name on it, because they put the gig calendar on the shirt and listed "May 20 @ Nathan's", so that's super exciting. I even found it in a decent color.

Thus ended my eighth house concert. I'm not really sure what happened. Both Brandt & I tapped our networks extensively, and although Matt isn't as well known as some of the past performers, he wasn't unknown and it was a Friday night. Fortunately, Matt and Rob didn't seem too disappointed by the lack of turnout (none of their people showed up either). They'd had a gig scheduled for Thursday and Saturday and were happy to have something to fill the Friday. I'm sure they would have preferred more people, but it beat nothing, barely.

EDIT: Figured it out. This is the first house concert where I didn't offer free ice cream. Guess I'll have to bring that back!
