Earlier this year I noted in a not quite timely fashion the
15th anniversary of me starting at my job and the tenth anniversary of me buying my house. I then proceeded to miss another major anniversary in August: namely, the tenth anniversary of the last time I wore a tie.
I was at the national convention for my fraternity in Indianapolis, and to go on the main floor of the convention you had to be wearing a tie. I never have actually learned how to tie a tie, so as I recall it was either the outgoing National President or the incoming National President (who is from my chapter and a friend) who tied it for me.
Ten years later, it looks like I may never wear a tie again. I dodged a bullet at my sister's wedding last year because if she'd wanted me to I would have. Otherwise, unless I need to interview somewhere (let's hope not) or am somehow involved in another wedding (unlikely), I think I'm in the clear. And if I get married again, I get veto power :-)
If I add up all the times in my life I've worn a tie, I suspect I'd find that the vast majority of them were for fraternity events in undergraduate, with interviews and weddings being the only other significant categories. If I'm lucky, I'll never need to learn to tie one.
