1. Earlier this year I had to reschedule two orchestra dates, which resulted in this being the first of three consecutive weekends that I had tickets for. M thought that was a bit much, so on Friday I took Danita to see an all
Ravel program. I particularly enjoyed the
Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, featuring
Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano. It's been quite a while since a piece of classical music caught my attention as much as this one.
2. On Saturday I met Emily and Chris after CrossFit for a pleasant lunch at
Merry Arts. M didn't join us as she wasn't feeling particularly well. I had a burger and fries, and brought M some takeout.
3. Saturday night, Danita and her son Josh joined M and I for dinner at my house (John was traveling). I made three recipes from my Moosewood cookbook, which were well received. We got ice cream at
Ice Cream Joy, then saw
Black Panther at the AMC. Danita and Josh were seeing it for the second time so after the film I got a quick summary of all the research they had done into it, which was a considerable amount. My off the cuff feeling is that it is certainly in one of the
top 4 Marvel films, and it had some of the best cinematography I've seen in a comic book film. With that said, Black Panther himself was frequently overshadowed by a stellar supporting cast, and it did lapse into the Marvel formula of "a hero fights somebody who is very similar to him" as outlined by
Howard Taylor. It's critical reviews are clearly influenced by it being the first mainstream black action film - and I have no problem with them handing out extra points for being first to accomplish something.
4. I gave platelets in the morning (my third donation this year) and read most of
The Autobiography of Malcolm X while doing so. I finished off everything other than
Alex Haley's epilogue that evening. The book was electric. I can easily understand why it is so popular to this day and personally feel that in terms of Haley's other works it far surpassed
Roots.
