1. Friday night was the third weekend in a row where I was at the orchestra, this time for famous conductor
Michael Tilson Thomas leading the orchestra through
three pieces by Russian composers. Lily joined me as M was at another concert featuring one of her friends. The highlight for me
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2, which featured
Daniil Trifonov on the piano. According to wikipedia it is "one of the most technically formidable piano concertos in the standard repertoire", and it sure seemed impressive to me. I also enjoyed
Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony.
2. My
Honda Civic had a recall for its passenger side airbag, so I got that taken care of Saturday morning. I read a nice chunk of
Invisible Man while I was there.
Saturday afternoon M and I went and saw
The Shape of Water at the AMC in Rocky River. We both really liked it. I personally feel that
Michael Shannon should have been nominated for best supporting actor instead of
Richard Jenkins, as his bad guy was incredibly disturbing, but that's a quibble. The film does amazing things with color palettes and avoided the obvious plot twist at the end, much to my pleasant surprise. I recommend it.
After the movie we grabbed a snack at
Rocky River Brewing Company (fries and wonton nachos), then we split up. M went to a birthday dinner for one of her friends and I went to my friend Eric's birthday party at
The Cleveland Brewing Company. I didn't know most of the people there besides JT and Sara, but over the course of a few locally brewed Hefeweizens and some very heavy appetizers I had some pleasant conversations.
3. Perhaps foolishly for the day the clocks spring ahead, M and I scheduled brunch with her friends Kris & Sara at
Earth Bistro Cafe, which was every bit as good as when we were
there for Helen's birthday. I had a platter with a pancake, a waffle AND french toast, plus all the breakfast meat.
