M and I started off the weekend by seeing the Cleveland Orchestra perform for our final pass of the 2017-2017 season. Somewhat ironically, this was the only one of the six orchestra concerts that I went to this season that was actually conducted by
Franz Welser-Möst. It was part of
the Prometheus project, during which Welser-Möst is conducting the Orchestra's performances of all nine of
Beethoven's symphonies. We saw symphonies 4 & 7 and had a good time. The program for this show was practically a book in its own right, running 75 pages, most of it densely written articles of a specialist nature about Beethoven. And yes, I read it.
On Saturday M headed back to Columbus for Mother's Day. I did a lot of errands and in the evening I went to see
Phantom Thread at the Cinematheque, where it was showing in 35MM.
Daniel Day-Lewis,
Lesley Manville and
Vicky Krieps all turn in excellent performances in a film that I found compelling and gorgeously shot, but ultimately the script, and particularly the end of the film, didn't quite work for me. That of course means it was just a good movie, not a great one. Weird side note: director
Paul Thomas Anderson is the son of Cleveland legend
Ghoulardi. Who knew?
Sunday morning I failed to give platelets due to low iron, so I went back and took a nap. then I had what I thought was a
Pretty good radio show, which was the first show of the summer semester. Than that evening
rshruti and I went out to vent about work. We ended up at a place in Kamm's Corners called
Red Lantern and had boozy milkshakes and a flatbread. I liked it well enough to go back.
