16 Years of Sundays: Now We're Cooking

Sep 23, 2018 19:56

Last fall I marked my fifteenth year on the radio on Sunday afternoons by switching to a new show. Soul Delirium features one hour of soul/R&B and one hour of freeform. This fall, I am keeping that format for the 4th consecutive semester. I've been digging heavily into the vinyl library and finding all sorts of cool stuff, so I wasn't inclined to quit.

This semester I also have a trainee for the first time since Spring 2017. AP Andrew's first day was today. As he was getting his first introduction to all the things that happen during a radio show, he noted that it was rather like cooking. I thought about that and it's the best analogy for my radio show that I've heard in some time.
- There are some things you can prepare ahead of time, and other things you cannot.
- There are some things that need to be dealt with at specific times, and other things that can wait.
- You may start with a detailed plan, but the best radio hosts are almost certainly going to improvise throughout the show.
-And the ultimate judgment of the final results is is heavily based on your personal taste.

Perhaps this explains why we have at least two cooking related promos right now... but probably not.
